Inauguration voice calls and video messages apparently strained beefed-up cell-phone networks in the Washington, D.C., area. Text messages seemed to do fine, while AT&T and T-Mobile reported redirecting congested traffic. An analyst said cell-phone users seemed to be learning a new kind of mobile etiquette for mass events.

Hundreds of thousands of Americans are planning to converge on the National Mall on January 20 to witness the historic moment when Barack Obama takes the oath of office.
